I can't tell if they are fake by your description, but even if they are fakes it won't mess up your DS. It is weird that they have frozen at all. I don't think any of my DS games ever froze except once maybe.

They're probably fake. Games don't just freeze up like that for no reason. Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver have been programmed with a bit of anti-piracy software in them, and to play pirated versions of the games, you need to patch that software out, making the ROM less stable and liable to freeze up like that at certain points. They won't mess up your DS, though, unless they were hacked specifically to do that. You should be able to play worry-free, except, you know, fear of the game freezing in the middle of something important.
